Phone call again:
Drove over Arthurs pass today driving closer and closer to, and then through mountains with snow on them ... very spectacular. More Alpine colours ... much more brown, rather than the green that's been everywhere else. Short scrubby bushes, rather than trees, and grey rock slides, made it a very different colour.
Then drove along a gorge with amazing engineering to let the road through, including a roof over the road in places for rockfalls, and a chute sending a waterfall to the other side of the road.
Now on the west coast ... mountains going right down to the water, and 100m of wild surf out from the beach.
Stopped at Punakaiki, between Greymouth and Westport. Amazing headland made of pancake rock, with many blowholes and columns sticking up (similar to the Bungle Bungles, but more jagged cause of water erosion). There was a very nice flat (wheel chair friendly) walking track out to it, and it was greatly appreciated.
It's really hazy everywhere ... presumably because of spray thrown up by the surf.
Hoping to find a computer tomorrow, but at the moment, am lucky to even have a reasonably phone signal where they stop for the night.
