Derby

We've had a relaxing couple of days here, catching up on phone calls, postcard writing and the like and doing some shopping at the first Woolies since Kununurra. We're always happy to see Woolies or Coles and know we can stock up on essentials. We've been to watch the sunset at the wharf -beautiful! We also watched the tide at the wharf - Derby has the biggest tides in Australia and the second highest in the southern hemisphere - 11 metres - you can see it moving in and out quickly - it's quite a sight. We went for a drive yesterday to see the prison boab tree, where they used to hold Aboriginals they had taken from their families, before sending them off to work for the white settlers. It makes me sad to realize how they were so badly treated. We also visited an aboriginal cultural centre and heard about their creator god and saw many of their paintings of him. We're enjoying seeing their art. We're getting quite an appreciation for it.
