Well I'm doing it again - getting ahead of Megans update from a SMS. We had no signal last night, so couldnt text her till this morning.
Today we thought we'd better stop drifting around the south coast, so we headed to Dunedin and straight to the Otago Peninsula. We've been on lots of very winding and up and down roads with steep sides, but this was the worst for me! I have a sore arm from clutching the arm rest, and a sore knee from putting on the brakes (no, I wasnt driving). Dont know why it was so scarey, maybe because there werent any trees on the side of the road - just nothing - nothing to the side, nothing ahead . . . I didnt enjoy it at all, which was a pity, because the views were spectacular.
We first drove right to the end, and saw the albatross nesting centre - the only place where albatross nest on the mainland, rahter than islands. Couldnt see the albatross at this point, but the centre was interesting.
Walked around the cliff a bit, and took pictures of shags nesting on the cliffs.
Then we had a cruise on a boat which went quite close to different sorts of shags nesting in a different spot - all crowded together. Also fur seals on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. And further out in the Southern Ocean, we saw albatross, gliding close to the surface of the sea, feeding, and taking off by running along the water a few steps. That was nice! We also saw two blue penquins (fairy penquins) swimming, and some other sea birds. Barry wasnt sick, which was good.
Next we planned to go to Lanarch castle, but it cost $25 each, so we didnt bother. Some of the tourist attractions are way overpriced, and there's never a senior or pensioner discount like we get in Oz.
Now back in dunedin, after riding the scarey road again!
