Monkey Mia

What a great day we had today! We arrived at Monkey Mia a bit before 9am, when the second dolphin interaction of the morning had just begun. While some of us stood in calf deep water, and others on the jetty, we watched several dolphins swimming close to us and the ranger, and others just a bit further out.

The dolphin program is quite strict - only the same five dolphins are fed each day, up to three times from 8-12, whenever they come in.

They are given a smallish quantity of food, so they don't lose their hunting ability, or neglect to teach their babies. Only the females come in to be fed, and some bring their babies fairly close in too

After this, we had a cruise on a catamaran, taking us first to a "black pearl" farm, to learn about cultivated pearls, and then to cruise around looking for dugong. After we sailed to the main dugong feeding area, we saw maybe 6-8 dugong, including a mother and baby. Luckily they have to come to the surface to breathe, or we wouldn't have seen any! Watch facebook for pics. We also saw more dolphins, and got a glimpse of a turtle.

Then back to the resort restaurant, for a delicious gourmet steak sandwich!
