Dampier

I quite like Dampier despite the fact that it is on the doorstep of the largest mining area in Australia. There are ships and trains constantly being loaded with iron ore and natural gas and there are a number of oil rigs off the coast. There's a natural gas pipeline that runs from here all the way to Perth and another one from the rigs to here- and yet this little town has a nice feel to it. It doesn't feel overrun with industry or pollution and has a pretty outlook over the archipelago just offshore. We had a drive around the area this morning and went to look at some Aboriginal rock engravings. We also found our first wildflowers - sturts desert peas and one or two others, just starting to come into flower. We're looking forward to seeing lots more on our travels.
